Aim The aim of this course is to provide the participant with an awareness of the risks associated with fall-arrest situations and considerations for self and assisted recovery of persons in fall arrest.  The course has a risk management theme that emphasises the use of fall arrest systems as a “last choice” option only to be used when other control measures are not suitable.
Description The Introduction to ‘Height Safety Systems and Procedures’ program that incorporates basic height safety concepts of fall arrest and fall restraint.  Participants are instructed in the correct application and use of height safety harnesses, lanyard and connectors.
 Duration Total 4 hours broken up into 1 hours of theory & 3 hours of practical.
Unit/s of Competence
Participants attending this course are required to demonstrate a low level knowledge and skill sufficient to enable them to gain an appreciation of the concepts facilitated.  The participants will only be expected to apply their knowledge in the context facilitated. 
 Accreditation Participants who successfully complete the course will be issued with a Risk, Response & Rescue Height Safety Identification card & certificate.
 Course Content *An overview of legislation and responsibilities associated with heights.
*Training requirement for employees working at heights i.e. certificates of competency, etc.
*Circumstances that warrant the establishment of height safety systems.
*Inspection and correct fitting of harnesses.
*System methods – access, safety back-up, two points of contact principles.
*Categories of height safety systems i.e. fall arrest, fall restraint.
*Fall arrest equipment and techniques, including inertia reels, personal shock absorbers, lanyards, karabiners and retractable lanyards.
*Awareness of potential shock loads.
*Consideration for anchorages and fastening points.
*Considerations for first aid following a height safety system failure.
*Awareness of suspension trauma or harness induce syndrome.
*Considerations for recovery of workers in fall arrest.

The information is aligned to relevant NSW Occupational Health and Safety legislation, the National Code of Practice for the Prevention of Falls from Heights in Construction work (NOHSC), and various Australian Standards and CDSCC site procedures and equipment.
Resources Required
Suitable venues will be required to conduct both the theoretical and practical aspects of the training.  It is most beneficial if access to site structures can be obtained for practical exercises.  This needs to be arranged prior to the commencement of training if possible.
